At the 2019 International Knowledge-Sharing Symposium on “Developing a National Carbon Capture and Storage Programme in Trinidad and Tobago”, stakeholders identified a Carbon Storage Atlas as a key step in developing a National Carbon Capture and Storage programme for Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). This Atlas is being developed by The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and The University of The West Indies (UWI) through the Carbon, Capture Utilization and Storage Collaborate (CCUS-C) which was established on May 1st, 2024.

The storage atlas is at a progressive stage through collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI), energy stakeholders and our international partners. As we proceeded with our efforts in building a CCS programme in T&T, there was a need to communicate milestones, synergize and our efforts amongst all stakeholders and plan the way forward. This second International Symposium entitled Towards a Net-Zero Carbon Future with CCS: Synergizing Stakeholders, Milestones and the Way-Forward” was hosted by the CCUS-C at The UWI Inn and Conference Centre on September 6th, 2024. The Symposium was arranged with support from the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG) and The University of Texas (UT) at Austin, Bureau of Economic Geology (UT-BEG), for state, academic and private stakeholders. We consider this an essential step for us to further explore with relevant stakeholders, the potential to develop CCS and CCUS, as a part of T&T’s national carbon emission reduction and climate change mitigation strategy.
